Cashmere going to the dogs Sept. 17-18

The Wenatchee Kennel Club Dog Show, Sept. 17-18, is expected to bring some 2,400 people to Cashmere.

Man's best friend (and all his friends) will be visiting Cashmere Sept. 17-18 for the Wenatchee Kennel Club Dog Show.

To be held at the Chelan County Expo Center, the event draws about 1,200 dogs, said Louise Day of the local kennel club. Typically, each dog is then joined by at least two people, Day said. So Cashmere businesses should expect at least 2,400 visitors that weekend.

The dog show, accredited by the American Kennel Club, draws dog enthusiasts from around Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana and Canada. It begins at 8 a.m. each day and ends about 7 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Some 150 ribbons and 100 trophies will be given away at the show, Day said. There will be about 10 show rings (called confirmation events) put up as well as four to six rings for obedience competitions, she said. Brief seminars will be conducted each morning at 8 a.m. for anyone who is unfamiliar with dog show rules so they can better follow along during the weekend. And several vendors will be set up selling all things dog related (and dog enthusiast related).

The Wenatchee club has been putting on the show for 50 years. With its golden anniversary, the club also will be putting on some special events at the show this year, Day said. Watch for the schedule of events at www.wenatcheekennelclub.com. The schedule of events also will be a good way to see when the different breeds will be in the rings.
