Cool Science on a hot day

Thursday was filled with sunshine, science, and simple fun as Cashmere Kids enjoyed a day at the Museum Rotary Park. It all began with a 'Super Cool' science show led by Roxanne, a personable presenter from the Pacific Science Center. About seventy five children watched as she made physics fun while encouraging audience participation as liquid nitrogen played tricks with ordinary objects..a racquetball, a graham cracker, a cork.

As the science show ended, the kids scattered to craft tables where they could put together a cardboard teepee, decorate a bookmark, or get their faces painted by Cashmere Royalty. A long line formed at the dunk tank, and then reformed at the cake walk where winners took home (or immediately ate) a cupcake. Boys especially enjoyed the tour of the Fire Dept. ambulance where they had a chance to lie on the gurney. Next they could create a sheriff's badge, thread a necklace, or learn to make paper. One of the longest, slowest most popular lines was in front of Cashmere cartoon artist, Dan McConnell, who would sketch your face on a wanted poster to take home and frame. At one table kids and parents were invited to decorate a card to be sent to a soldier overseas, and at another station kids were making rope that 'looked just like I got it at the store'.

As it got close to two o'clock, craft supplies began to run low and the crowd of about 150 kids started to thin. The volunteers began packing up satisfied that it had been a successful day of fun and education for the kids of Cashmere.
We celebrate the Community who worked together to make this event happen. Although the Museum led the planning and provided the site, the Friends of Old Mission paid for the Science Van. Other costs were covered by generous donations from the Cashmere American Legion, Wacoka Kiwanis, and Cashmere Lions. Christ Center Church organized the rope making, Vale PTO provided the cupcakes, and artists Dan McConnell and Vicki Hilsberg donated their talents. Martin's Market loaned us their canopy and dunk tank, and a dozen volunteers gave us a day of their time to supervise the crafts. Thank you to all who helped in so many ways. CASHMERE ROCKS!
