Go ahead -- eat that fair food and support a charity

Wacoka will be flipping burgers this week at the Chelan County Fair.

Burgers. Elephant ears. Cotton candy. Fried twinkies. What's a fair without fair food?

There will be plenty of traditional fair foods served up during the next four days at the Chelan County Fair.

Feeling guilty about indulging a little? It's time you start looking at that indulgence as a way of giving back.

The Chelan County Fair provides a venue for multiple nonprofit organizations' fund-raising efforts. Several community organizations will be manning food booths this week with volunteers to raise money for their respective programs.

Take Wacoka of Cashmere. For 21 years the local Kiwanis group, with much help from its friends, has raised money during the fair for all its projects that serve the community. Buying a burger -- and a great burger, at that -- from Wacoka means you are supporting its annual Christmas store, scholarships to local students, Thanksgiving baskets distribution to the needy and much more.

The Cashmere American Legion Post and Auxiliary No. 64 also will be selling its famous corn dogs and corn on the cob. The club has been setting up a booth since the fair started in 1952. Last year five bins of Quincy corn and almost 300 pounds of hot dogs made into corn dogs were consumed by hungry fair-goers. Profits are used to support veterans, children and youth, as well as other community projects.

So support your local community organizations when you're at the fair this weekend. Eat away!
